Introduction

Science helps students meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, social-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society. 

Course Descriptions

Grade 9 Science, Locally Developed (SNC1L) 

This course enables students to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts in biology, chemistry, physics, and science in their everyday life; to develop safe and practical skills in science investigation; and to apply their knowledge and skills to everyday situations. Students conduct investigations into practical problems and issues related to cells and body systems, the structure and properties of elements and compounds, static and current electricity, and the science of cooking, self-care and sports. A variety of hands-on activities and learning strategies assist students to acquire concepts and different reporting strategies will facilitate the development of communication skills. Students will be encouraged to develop an understanding and appreciation of the wonders and complexities of God’s creations, both living and non-living. 

Grade 9 Science, Applied (SNC1P) 

This course enables students to understand essential concepts and practical applications in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics; to develop safe and practical skills in science investigation; and to apply their knowledge and skills to everyday situations. Students will design and conduct investigations into practical problems and issues related to sustainable ecosystems and human activity, the structure and properties of elements and compounds, astronomy and space exploration, and static and current electricity. A variety of hands-on activities assist students to acquire concepts and different reporting strategies will facilitate the development of communication skills. Students will be encouraged to develop an understanding and appreciation of the wonders and complexities of God’s creations, both living and non-living. 

Grade 9 Science, Academic (SNC1D) 

This course enables students to understand essential concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics; to develop safe and practical skills in science investigation; and to apply their knowledge and skills to everyday situations. Students will focus on learning essential and related concepts, with an emphasis on both theory and practical applications related to sustainable ecosystems and human activity, the structure and properties of elements and compounds, astronomy and space exploration, and static and current electricity. Students will design and conduct investigations to assist with the understanding of concepts and different reporting strategies will facilitate the development of communication skills. Students will be encouraged to develop an awareness and appreciation of the wonders and complexities of God’s creations, both living and non-living.
