Introduction

Experiences in the arts – drama, music, and the visual arts – play a valuable role in the education of all students. Through participation in the arts, students can develop their creativity, learn about their own identity, and develop self-awareness, self-confidence, and a sense of well-being.

Drama

Grade 9, Dramatic Arts (Open) ADA1O1 

This course emphasizes the active exploration of dramatic forms and techniques, using material from a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures. Students will construct, discuss, perform, and analyze drama, and then reflect on the experiences to develop an understanding of themselves, the art form, and the world around them. 

Visual Arts

Grade 9, Visual Art (Open) AVI1O1 

No experience necessary! Want to build problem solving skills through engaging hands-on activities? Visual Art teaches you how to access creativity and develop critical thinking by working through challenges presented in different art practices. Your communication skills will be enhanced as you collaborate with peers through drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture projects. By making things your never though you could, your confidence will grow along with your skills. 

Music 

Grade 9, Guitar (Open) AMG1O1 

This course emphasizes guitar performance and introduces students to the norms and conventions of playing guitar in solo and group settings. No prior musical experience is required, and you do not need to know how to read music to take this course. Students will also learn the basics of guitar notation, tablature, the history of the instrument, and its tremendous impact on popular music. In addition, this course creates incredible opportunities for extra-curricular activities within the school community. 

Grade 9, Instrumental Music (Open) AMU1O1 

This course is designed for students who wish to play a band instrument at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. No prior musical experience is required to take this course; students with prior experience may take this course to further develop their musicianship. Students will study an overview of the importance of music throughout history in both Western and non-Western cultures. Students will also learn correct musical terminology and develop an understanding of the musical language as it appears in print. 

Grade 9, Vocal Music (Open) AMV1O1 

This course emphasizes vocal performance at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students do not need to have previous musical experience to take this course; students with prior experience may take this course to further develop their musicianship.  Students will study an overview of the importance of music throughout history in Western and Non-Western cultures.
